Inspiration
When asked, “What was the inspiration behind ‘Too Good Too Be True’?” I don’t have an emotional personal experience to draw on for it’s lyrical story. However, the inspiration to write the song was as a result of a long line of serendipitous introductions.
Fulfilling our dream, I moved to Ireland with my husband from South Wales in the Autumn of 2016 following a long love affair with its culture and its people.
At the age of 58, I did not play any instrument nor indeed read or write music. I was introduced to an exceptionally friendly gentleman, Pat Suds who in turn introduced me to a major talent (and also friendly) Declan Cosgrove. Dec tutored me in his revolutionary piano playing method where I didn’t have to read traditional notation in order to play. We were further introduced to a wonderful local venue, ‘The Forge’ where poets, musicians and singers of all abilities are encouraged to perform amongst friends. It was within this group of wonderful people, together with the support and encouragement of my husband, that I ventured to compose my first song, ‘Too Good To Be True’.
The songs story seemed to develop quite naturally around the phrase
‘Too good to be true’, a phrase that I can remember growing up with and when used would serve as warning - ‘If it looks or sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.’ Learning the piano enabled me to put a melody to my lyrics, which was as much as surprise to me as it was to anyone else. My next challenge was to have my song recorded and as I don’t sing except in large crowds or attending a rugby match, this was certainly going to be quite a challenge.
Cue the brilliantly talented Lisa Maher with her lovely voice and gift with guitar. Lisa, who I am now lucky enough to call a friend, agreed to record my song for me and interpret the melody on her guitar. Pat and Dec also agreed to produce the song and so the saying goes, ‘the rest is history’.
I couldn’t quite believe it when Pat approached me requesting the inclusion of ‘Too Good To Be True’ on his double album ‘Never Too Late’. I of course said yes but I’m still in awe of the incredible collection of amazing artists that Pat has brought together.
Well done Pat and thank you. Px
And finally, moving to the ‘Emerald Isle’ with our equine and canine family was the hardest thing that we have ever done together but my husband and I wouldn’t wish to be anywhere else in the world.
